Mastering Number

The mastering number is an initiative implemented at Grove Vale to make sure children leave each key stage with sound and flexible number sense and are secure in age-related number facts (addition/ subtraction/ multiplication/ division). Swifter recall of number facts reduces cognitive load and frees up working memory to apply and learn new concepts. It is a 15 minute mental math session done 4 times per week in years EYFS – Year 5 (Year 6 mental maths provision is embedded with in maths lessons)

EYFS and KS1

This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future. This is continued into year 3 through embedding the impact, personalising sessions to solidify addition and subtraction facts.

Mastering Number Overviews (EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2)

Numberblocks form a regular part of our mastering number provision in EYFS and Year 1.

BAFTA award-winning Numberblocks helps children to see how numbers really work − and master a new key maths skill with every adventure.
It’s a story of friends who can always count on each other − but, most of all, Numberblocks is about having fun with numbers.

Numberblocks is a step-by-step learning journey grouped neatly into five colour-coded levels. Each level introduces ever greater numbers and a sequence of key topics and skills that help your child build natural number sense and a solid foundation of mathematical understanding.

KS2

This programme enables pupils in year 4 and 5 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number where they exemplify good number sense. Areas covered over the course of year 4 and 5 are:

  • Unitising
  • Properties of number such as whether they are odd or even/ square, multiples of…
  • Magnitude of number related to other numbers
  • Missing factors in multiplication equations linked to division equations
  • Automaticity in all the core multiplication facts
  • Scaling by 10/ 1/10
  • Multiplying by a unit fraction connected to division by the denominator
  • Contexts – pupils engaging with and writing maths stories
  • Use a ratio table to explore a constant (functional) relationship and a scalar relationship
